FreeWheel PATENTBoise Inventor Receives Patent for Revolutionary Wheelchair Attachment PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 29, 2010 On June 15, 2010, U.S. Patent # 7735847 was issued for the All Terrain Adapter for a Wheelchair, more commonly known as the FreeWheel™ Wheelchair Attachment. After 4 years of development, 3 years of “patent-pending” status, 2 years of beta-testing, and a lot of waiting, Boise inventor Patrick Dougherty received confirmation that his patent was approved by the U.S Patent and Trademark Office. “It’s pretty exciting to have it officially confirmed that my design and product is indeed unique. Though the people that are using the FreeWheel have been telling me that all along,” states Dougherty. The original design has evolved over the last 2 years and there is now an additional patent application pending. “I should probably send out a ‘thank you’ to my UofI engineering instructor who told me the key to developing a piece of adaptive equipment was KISS, keep it simple stupid,” jokes Dougherty. The FreeWheel, now in production, is available on-line at www.gofreewheel.com as well as through dealers in the U.S. and a number of foreign countries. “Today I got an email from a FreeWheel customer in Greece,” said Dougherty, “who said the design ‘Is brilliant’ and that he is ‘Now starting to think about all the new options open for me,’ … that doesn’t get old!” The FreeWheel is a wheeled device that securely clamps to the footrest of rigid-frame manual wheelchairs. It lifts the front casters off the ground turning the wheelchair into a sturdy three-wheeler that can attack any terrain. The result is vastly increased mobility and independence.
